Early Years 2

Jimmy and The Tornadoes! This was the late fifties when young Ashari was lead guitarist for the then top band in Kuching. We used to tune in to "Make Thine Music" hosted by Mr. Rock Kuek to listen to Jimmy belting out Cliff Richard songs. Their theme was "40 Miles of Bad Road" which can easily be heard now on YouTube played by Duane Eddy. What memories does this bring you ? What were you doing then ? Who were you with ? Remember the greasy hairstyle kept in place with "Yardley Pomade" or "Himalayan Bouquet" . Tony Curtis curls and Elvis "Curry Puffs" and "Duck Tails" were in fashion. Girls wore Pony Tails and Can Can Skirts !

Well, talk about early....that's Frank and me and a friend posing with "Runaround Sue". It was 1962 and we were working in Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, Brunei. The Bike was a 350c.c. Triumph Tiger and was named after Susie H. The crush hadnt rubbed off yet.
That's it for now. If any of yous want to have your stories posted dont hesitate to let us know. We will include you in the contributers list.
Cheers !

  1. No need now. Ignore my earlier question. I am now able to open the pages.....yes, your Early Years 2 posting. We were known as Jimmy and The Tornadoes, modeling ourselves on Cliff Richard & The Shadows! Except for Jimmy and myself, Ahmad (right of pix, seated on drum)our rhythm guitarist, moved to Sibu, Bojeng Han, our drummer (left of pix, standing) died some years back. Aladdin Lamus, our bass player (standing on Jim's left) went MIA. This guy was hell of a drinker. When we performed twice weekly at the Aurora during the Confrontation, we got paid $250 each (big money then when beer cost only about 90 cents for a big bottle and gasoline at around 95 cents per GALLON (not liter, mind you) Instead of getting his pay each time, Aladdin would be paying back the Aurora every cent of his pay to cover his drinks from the Bar! The group eventually broke up when I was sent for a six-month training in basic journalism in Kuala Lumpur. When I came back we attempted to re-group but before we could even start to strum our guitars, I got posted to start our Miri Office followed by a transfer to Sibu for eight months before going on a further training in Cardiff, South Wales. This was followed by working attachments to various newspapers in Brighton,Bath and Boston. If only we had avoided copying the Shadows and be original and had the opportunity to cut and sell records....and perform professionally!!

  2. Dave, I got it now. The Magnificent 7 and where is the 7th ? The mean-looking Sheriff Lobo took her out at the OK Corral when she (or she-im, the pondan) tried to get fresh with one of his favourite Deputies. Case closed.
